8-bit art

These Beige Records guys are doing some bizarre techno-art. Like the “hand erased” NES cartridge that just plays super mario clouds over and over.

Last days in Paris, on our way home…

Well, vacations have to come to and end, or they wouldn’t be vacations, right?

Yesterday we toured the cemetery Pere-Lachaise where lots of famous people are buried, including Jim Morrison and Oscar Wilde and Chopin. It was interesting and photogenic. Continuing with the theme, dead people in Paris, we toured the Catacombes, where 5 to 6 million people worth of bones are stored. Apparently the cemeteries were on prime real estate and when Paris grew, they had to move the bones. These caverns were full of an amazing amount of skeletons. It was quite bizarre.

Our last night in Paris was quite nice… we walked to the Bastille and then walked around a hip district called the Marais. We had wine and then dinner and then some more wine. Tres French.

This morning started early… especially after that wine and only a 3 hour nap. We took the fastest taxi ever (153 km/h!) to the airport where we hopped a Lufthansa flight to Frankfurt. Now we have a 4 hour layover, but at least they have free, fast internet to help us pass the time… and so I can post a final entry on our Europe travelogue.

We’ll be home at about 6 p.m. tonight (Sunday)… we’ll torture you with slideshows soon.

Thanks for coming along on our trip and for the great comments…

Yesterday and Today

Saturday, April 19th, 2003

Yesterday we did the Louvre museum. Lots of photos, none of which I’m gonna post… I’m getting paranoid about how much this internet access is going to have cost us.

Today we went to the Musee d’Orsay… the Impressionists were the highlight… I took photos of each Van Gogh painting… and a ton of other good ones. I’ll post when we get home….

Tonight we met with our cool French friends Delphine and Christophe. They’re the first people I’ve ever met on the internet that I’ve then gone on to meet IRL (in real life). They were awesome and showed us around the Mouffetard Quarter. They weren’t cheesy at all.

Tomorrow we’re going to check out dead people: the Catacombes and the cemetery where Jim Morrison is buried.

Viewpoint Day

Thursday, April 17th, 2003

This morning we took the Metro to Montmartre, where there is a very old church on top of the highest point (on land) in Paris. The view was nice and romantic. We hiked back to our part of town and went to the top of a department store which also had panoramic views. Then, this evening, we took the Metro to the Eiffel Tower, where we waited in line, saw some views, and then waited in line some more to get to the tip top and saw some the same views, but higher (1056 ft!). Pretty nice.

More from Paris

The weather here is freakin’ beautiful… yesterday we walked around in our side of town a while and lounged in the sun Luxembourg Gardens, which are next to French Parliament, along with about a million Parisians and tourists.

Today, we are heading up to Montmartre to look around and then maybe to the Louvre for the evening (they stay open late today).
